Why You Need Mexico Auto Insurance

In 2014 the Mexican government changed the insurance laws, requiring liability auto insurance coverage on all federal roadways for newer vehicles. Incrementally, older vehicles were included, until January 1, 2019, when the requirement became mandatory for all vehicles. Legally, you must have auto liability insurance from a Mexican insurer, to drive your vehicle on Mexican roadways. A U.S. policy will not be accepted by Mexican authorities.

If you plan to drive a vehicle beyond the Mexico "Free Zone" you must obtain a Temporary Importation Permit (TIP) from Banjercito, the official Mexican issuing agency. It may be purchased online at the Banjercito website or at a border location. Learn more about Vehicle Import Permits.
