Can I get a Temporary Importation Permit from Mexpro?

No. You can ONLY get a Temporary Importation Permit (TIP) through Mexico's Banjercito government agency. Mexpro has no affiliation, authority or connections with this organization.

When do I need a vehicle import permit?

Any time you drive a vehicle beyond the Mexico Free Zone, you will need to purchase a Mexico Vehicle Import Permit. The Mexico Free Zone is also known as the Liberated Zone, or Perimeter Zone or Free Trade Zone. The term is a customs designation for the area located along the Mexican international land borders, and which run inward up to the point at which the Mexican Customs authorities have their first "interior check point.” This is usually about 20 to 26 kilometers or 12-17 miles from the border towns. Exceptions are on the peninsula of Baja California and places like Puerto Peñasco and other portions of Sonora, though not all of Sonora.

Do I need a importation permit if I drive in Sonora?

Maybe. You are only required to obtain a permit if driving further than kilometer 98 of Mexican Federal Highway No. 15.

How much does a temporary import permit cost?

Effective June 11, 2011, the fee for importation of a vehicle is $44.00 USD plus IVA (tax). This fee is the same whether the permit is obtained at the border or online. You will also be required to pay a refundable deposit on the vehicle; the amount is determined by the age of the vehicle. https://www.banjercito.com.mx/registroVehiculos/

How much is the required deposit for a permit?

You must pay a deposit when you obtain a vehicle importation permit, to ensure you will return your vehicle to the US. The guarantee deposit is charged to all vehicles. The amount is determined by the vehicle year.

  • 2007 - Newer $400 USD
  • 2001 - 2006 $300 USD
  • 2000 - Older $200 USD

The guarantee will be refunded upon cancellation of the permit at Banjercito offices, as long as it is done prior to the expiration date of the permit, otherwise it will be forfeited.

What if I have rented or have a lien on my vehicle?

If the vehicle is financed, is a rental car, is leased, and/or a company car, a notarized letter of permission is required from the lien holder or lending institution. You should also have proof of Mexican auto insurance.

I am not a citizen of the US, can I still apply online?

Only US and Canadian citizens can apply for a temporary vehicle import permit online.

How far in advance do I need to purchase a permit online?

You can apply for a temporary vehicle import permit up to six months before you plan to travel to Mexico. You should not apply online for a permit less than 10 days before you plan to travel to Mexico. Remember you can always purchase your vehicle import permit at the border, but it may take more time.

What documents do I need to purchase a vehicle permit?

The required documents are listed on our website and are the same whether you apply online or in person, at the border.

How long can I stay in Mexico after purchasing my importation permit?

The vehicle import permit is good for up to six months (180 days). You can enter and exit Mexico as many times as you wish during the period your permit is valid. If you travel to Mexico without a valid permit your vehicle can be confiscated by Mexican authorities.

Why do I have to cancel and return my permit before it expires?

To get the refund for the guarantee deposit, the permit must be returned to Banjercito offices prior to the expiration date of the permit, otherwise it will be forfeited. The deposit is paid when obtaining the vehicle importation permit, and ensures the return of the vehicle to the US.

Where do I return/cancel my temporary import permit?

At any Banjercito office located on the border. It does not have to be the same border location where you entered Mexico.

What happens if I drive in Mexico without a temporary importation permit?

If you are caught your vehicle may be confiscated by Mexican authorities.

How do I cancel a permit if I have a total loss accident or if my vehicle is stolen in Mexico?

You will need to contact Mexico customs at these phone numbers: (from Mexico) 01-800-463-6728, press option 7 for "comercio exterior" (from US) 1-800-475-2393; or at this email address: CIITEVAduanaMexico@sat.gob.mx.

Can I sell my car while in Mexico?

No. It is illegal.

Do I need a vehicle importation permit if I am towing boat?

Yes. The cost is around $50 US, but you should refer to the Banjercito website for specifics.

How long is my RV or travel trailer permit good for?

The RV and travel trailer permits are good for up to 10 years!

Is my pickup truck with a slide-in camper eligible?

No. The 10-year RV temporary import permit is ONLY allowed for RVs or converted vans.

What if I am towing a vehicle with my RV?

You are allowed to tow a second vehicle, but that vehicle is only eligible for the six-month vehicle import permit. You must have an importation permit for both.

Do I need a vehicle import permit to travel to Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco)?

No. The cities of Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco), Guaymas, San Carlos, Hermosillo, Bahia de Kino, Caborca, Father Kino Missions, Magdalena and Santa Ana are all part of the Sonora, Mexico free zone and do not require import permits. You are only required to obtain a permit if driving further than kilometer 98 of Mexican Federal Highway No. 15.

How much does a Sonora Only temporary importation permit cost?

About $30 US plus IVA (tax) if purchased from Banjercito at border locations, $50 online.

If I pre-register for an importation permit, how do I get it?

You can obtain your Sonora only permit at the Banjercito border locations in Agua Prieta, Cananea or Empalme. Or, you can get it at the Mexican Consulate.

How far in advance can I purchase a Sonora Only temporary permit?
