PHIL FRIEDMAN ON FISHING: Rocky Point a place of action

Healthy ReefThe bright glow of powerful lights off El Segundo are from commercial squid boats in search of market squid.

The squid have been hard to come by this year, so the vast quantities of the sought after mollusks in the Santa Monica Bay has attracted a sizable fleet.

Private boaters would be wise to tank up on some of this squid and head to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. There has been sporadic catches of white seabass, halibut and yellowtail using live squid for bait near Rocky Point.

The Redondo Special hooked and landed some big yellowtail earlier this week, and while fishing has been far from wide open, it takes only one tanker white seabass to make your day.

Offshore update: Offshore fishing remained good for several boats out of Los Angeles/Orange County landings this week.
