AAA: Oil Spill Impact on Travel to Mexico
According to a recent survey performed by AA Auto Club South, few people are changing travel plans due to the recent April 20th Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Of the 1,400 people questioned in a survey taken a month after the spill and east of the Mississippi:
- 87% have not changed plans to visit Florida’s Gulf Coast in the last 30 days and 58% said they would likely not change their plans as a result of the oil spill.
- 13% did change plans to visit, though none cited reasons related to the oil spill.
- 41% of those surveyed stated the spill will contribute slightly or significantly to future travel to the Gulf Coast of Florida.
The senior VP of AAA Auto Club South, Kevin Bakewell, stated, “While we are encouraged that only a small percentage of travelers are canceling their current plans, we are concerned that a much larger percentage says news about the oil spill will have a greater influence on their future plans."
